The first people to inhabit America arrived here before history. They left a trail of evidence in fossils, artifacts, earthworks, ruins, and petroglyphs. For several centuries, their descendents warred with newly-arriving Americans. Their most recent descendents are still among us today—at once members of independent nations and fellow Americans. Since we cannot tell our story without them, we begin at the beginning, with the first Americans.
